Welcome to Mottola – the spy of the Ionian Sea
Mottola is a charming village in the province of Taranto, nestled on the western edge of the Terra delle Gravine and known as the spy of the Ionian Sea for its breathtaking views.
A place where history, nature, and spirituality intertwine in an authentic and timeless experience.
What to see
The historic center, known as the “Schiavonia,” preserves its medieval layout with alleys, arches, and small squares that tell centuries of history.
Mottola is especially famous for its rock churches, part of the so-called Grotte di Dio (Caves of God): real sanctuaries carved into the rock, embellished with medieval frescoes. Among the most important are : San Nicola, San Gregorio, Sant’Angelo, and Santa Margherita.
Also of great interest is Gravina di Petruscio, an ancient rock village immersed in a unique natural setting, within the Terra delle Gravine Regional Nature Park.
Nature and experiences
The Mottola area offers trails, woods, and viewpoints that are ideal for hiking, trekking, nature walks, and landscape photography. The ravines are one of the most fascinating environments in Puglia, rich in biodiversity and important historical evidence, including the rock village of Petruscio, an ancient settlement carved into the rock. The historical heritage is completed by the Norman Tower, symbol of medieval Mottola and a panoramic viewpoint of great value.
The Bosco di Sant’Antuono, one of Mottola’s main green lungs, is the ideal place for walks and hikes surrounded by nature. Between the end of May and mid-June, it hosts the evocative phenomenon of bioluminescence, which, under certain conditions, illuminates the undergrowth, creating a rare and fascinating atmosphere that is much appreciated by visitors and nature lovers.
Traditions and taste
A visit to Mottola is also a journey into the flavors of Apulian tradition: extra virgin olive oil, baked goods, peasant cuisine, and local specialties linked to religious and popular festivals.
